Vaginal Rejuvenation Q & A

What Is Vaginal Rejuvenation?

A vaginal rejuvenation procedure in which the vagina is tightened, after it has become stretched due to childbirth, age or other reasons. There are several different types of vaginal rejuvenation today. One of the newest options is the ThermiVa procedure.

This non-surgical procedure is performed in the doctor's office and is generally one in a series of three treatments. The ThermiVa system utilizes radiofrequency energy waves, sending the energy to the area of the vagina that needs tightening. This system is effective at not only vaginal tightening but also at reducing vaginal dryness and reducing or even eliminating urinary leakage. For some patients, a surgery called vaginoplasty is the best option for vaginal rejuvenation. The choice of procedure depends largely on the patient's desired outcome and her suitability for the procedure being considered.

Why Do Women Want Vaginal Rejuvenation Today?

Many women experience an increasingly relaxed vagina over time. This often occurs after childbirth, and also as the result of a decrease in circulating estrogens that comes with aging. The increased laxity often means that the woman may have less ability to become stimulated, leading to reduced sexual satisfaction and embarrassment. Vaginal rejuvenation can effectively address these and other vaginal laxity issues. The reasons women seek vaginal rejuvenation differ widely, but regardless of the motive, there is usually an excellent solution.

What Is the Recovery Time After a Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedure?

Recovery time can vary considerably based on the procedure chosen. Patients who opt for the Thermiva procedure can expect no downtime, with results noted after the first treatment. Patients who undergo a vaginoplasty surgery require local or general anesthesia and are generally able to return to their routine, including work, one week after surgery. However, with a vaginoplasty, patients must refrain from heavy exercise and sexual intercourse for about six weeks post surgery.

Choice of surgeon?

It is important for women to educate themselves regarding their surgeon’s training. Cosmetic genital surgeries should be done by physicians with training in obstetrics and gynecology, plus further training in cosmetic and/or urogynecology. The possible complications are lifelong and sometimes cannot be reversed.

While practitioners with other specialties have begun to perform labiaplasty and rejuvenation procedures, they are  not aware of the possible danger to nerves and blood vessels  of the pelvic anatomy. Patients need to empower themselves with an awareness of their surgeon’s training and experience.
