Well Woman Visit Q & A

What is a well-woman visit?

A well-woman visit is an annual appointment for a woman to meet with her gynecologist to check in on her overall health and wellbeing as well as have any necessary health screenings like pap smears, pelvic exams, breast exams, and blood work. This annual health assessment is an important part of preventive healthcare. The doctors at UroGyn Specialists of Florida work to develop long-term relationships with their patients so that they are able to notice any changes in the patient’s health and wellbeing. The annual opportunity to have any necessary screenings also helps to identify any changes or issues in a patient’s health, which can lead to earlier treatment. Most medical conditions are more easily and effectively treated in their early stages. However, many conditions like cervical cancer and high blood pressure don’t present symptoms in their early stages, so regular health screenings are the only way to diagnose these conditions.

What is a pap smear?

A pap smear is a simple test to check for any abnormalities on the cervix. During a pelvic exam, the doctor will take a small sample of cells from the cervix, which is sent for testing to see if there are any abnormal cells. Since cervical cancer is often symptomless, pap smears are critical to monitoring health so that any abnormalities can be treated as quickly as possible. Most women are recommended to have pap smears every 3 years, unless they have a higher risk of cervical cancer. Women should start to have pap smears when they become sexually active or reach the age of 21, whichever comes first. The manual pelvic exam should be conducted annually, as it allows the doctor to check on the ovaries and the health of the rest of the vaginal area.

When do I need to start having mammograms?

Most women begin to have annual mammograms at the age of 40, unless she’s at a higher risk of developing breast cancer in which case, mammograms may commence earlier or be carried out more often. Well-woman visits are an opportunity for a manual breast exam to be conducted by the doctor. Women should perform self-exams at home each month, typically just after her period has ended. If a woman notices any changes in her breasts, lumps, or any kind of discharge, she should make an appointment with UroGyn Specialists of Florida for a professional breast exam and mammogram.
